How important are d0 Follow links?

I have seen an seo agency ranking top 3 for an "seo city" KW. The competition is quite high. I analysed their back links with open link profiler. 95% of their links are no-follow blog comments from the same same website/blog. Their anchor text is all brand name, none of their main KW. The links all have a low quality score on Open Link Profiler. Ahrefs is not showing any 301 re-directs.

So how would they be ranking and are no-follow links just as good as d0 f0llow?

Most probably they're using hidden PBN or/and hidden 301's and the blog comments are just for diversity

Yes, hidden PBN links do the trick, people do their part to hide footprints.

They are actually using PBN to rank for that "seo city" keyword. But you can never find out because they hid the backlinks.
That's it!
But it's risky though.

Nope. No-follow backlinks cannot parallel do-follow backlinks. As has been mentioned above, the good links that helped them reach their current position are probably hidden and you cannot see them.

Both do follow & no follow links are still as topic of debate in many years for SEO at Google.

A others have stated they've probably hidden their links from spiders.
Everyone has different opinions in ********/nofollow but my .02 is that a nofollow link is next to worthless. I personally don't care about nofollow links at all.

I've seen a lot of sites, even with a few ******** links but a boatload of nofollow links and they all have good stats on majestic and others, and they get very good rankings, so nofollow links might carry a bigger weight than most of us would realise.
