I am thinking about starting a couple of domains with really good content, but I don't have a solid plan for attaining backlinks besides making some backlinks on social media.

I wonder, if my content is good enough, will I rank? Or, are backlinks necessary.

If the content is good and you don't have strong competition your site can rank well.
But if you have mid/high competition good content can't enough for ranking you will have to get quality backlinks.

If you target low competition keywords and write awesome articles you will rank and get traffic. But if you target high competition keywords you will have pretty much zero chances to rank. So keep that in mind :)

Ok.

What is the best way to find low competition keywords?

They're important but what's important first is optimizing your website. Something like:

- At least 500 words of text on each article. Larger pieces of content address searcher's intent more accurately and are thus easier to index.
- Create a sitemap & submit it & all money site article links (content) to Google Search Console
- Ensure your page load speed for the entire site is minimal (as fast as possible). See here: https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/wordpress-optimization-guide-from-3-to-1-second-load-time.1230324/
- Use Rank Math Instant Indexer with the Google API. Follow this link's instructions exactly: https://rankmath.com/blog/google-indexing-api/
- Create a social footprint online using all forms of social media including: Web 2.0's, Social bookmarking websites, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Reddit, etc.
- Ensure that your articles/posts are getting indexed by Google/Bing.

There's more such as which plugins to install such as perfmatters, simple custom CSS/JS, etc. However, also important is optimizing your articles as well:

- Title & description optimized with your main keyword.
- URL structure.
- Alt tags/Meta tags
- Internal links (linking to other articles or content posted on your website within the new article/content).
- H2 & H3 need to be optimized for your keyword topic as well.
- Use your main keyword a couple more times throughout the paragraphs/body of overall text between headings. Google needs to know what you're targeting.
- Longer content (1.5k+ words) is easier to optimize for entire topics. How long you decide to make your content is up to you, but the longer the better. The more questions about the topic that your content answers, the better.

you'll rank in the beginning until the sharks see you getting lots of free traffic and will start stealing your rankings with better content, stronger domains, and better topical authority than you can keep up with. And then you'll need backlinks

Your content being good enough is very subjective. It’s of course good enough to you, but to google?

If you already have a strong precense in social media you can get pretty decent traffic to get you started.

Trying to rank without links, even long tails is not easy.

Backlinks are especially valuable for SEO because they represent a "vote of confidence" from one site to another.

In essence, backlinks to your website are a signal to search engines that others vouch for your content. If many sites link to the same webpage or website, search engines can infer that content is worth linking to, and therefore also worth surfacing on a SERP. So, earning these backlinks can have a positive effect on a site's ranking position or search visibility.

Backlinks are important. People can rant about excellent content, but the fact is that you can even rank with poor content. If you write 100 articles and publish them on your website, you will undoubtedly get some traffic from Google, but something significant happens after having links.

If you are targeting competitive keywords, then backlinks are important.. You can rank if your content is too good and if you are targeting low competition keywords

Backlinks are important for SEO because they signal to Google that another resource finds your content valuable enough to link to it within their own content. As a website earns additional backlinks, search engines infer that the website possesses valuable content worth ranking well on the SERPs

If your niche is less competitive and the usage of keyword is low competition high search volume, then content alone will rank well. But if competition is high, backlink is essential to boost your site ranking. Content alone won't help you that time.

To add to this, consider IFTTT too.

The answer to this highly depends on the keywords of your content. Try doing a keyword research on your site's niche

It depends on keyword difficulty. You will need backlinks to rank for medium or high competition keywords

Depends on the competition level in your niche. But anyway, the backlinks a critical. And in most cases, in the content is good, it can help to gain more links naturally. But if you think you will just create content, this will not be a win-win strategy. It would help if you concentrated on the low KD and long tail keywords with small volume SEO queries from the beginning to start gaining traffic asap.

Backlinks are especially useful for SEO simply because they symbolize a "vote of confidence" in one website to some other. Essentially, backlinks to your site certainly are an indication to locate engines that the others attest to your content.
