Hi,

Doing some on-page for one of my sites now. Is putting keywords in the Image Description and the Alt Tags useful for on-page, or is it a waste of time?

Thanks!

Still, the keyword-rich image name and Alt tags are useful for SEO. If you use keywords in it, then it helps in driving traffic from image searches.

But, use once in the Alt attribute of an image on the page.

What about geo-tagging for local business pages? Is that going too far haha.

IMO,Geo-tagging is part of it, but not all. If the business is location-specific, then it’s best to include Geo tags, which tells the search engines where it's based.

I've been using alt tags for years, they certainly help with the on-page seo.

Got it thanks, geo-tagging the photos are going to be such a bitch haha.

In doing your SEO, remember what Alt Tags are used for. They are needed for people with poor vision and use screen readers. Simply describe what the image is in your alt tags. If you're using images that are relevant to your keywords, they will be helpful.

using keywords in alt tags can trigger over-seo penalty. telling from personnel experience.

Right. For instance, if you're shooting for "Best Vacuums" and you have an image of a Hoover Upright Vacuum cleaners, your alt tag should be the actual model of the Hoover Upright Vacuum that is in the image. Just a description of what the image is. After all, you are supposed to be using alt tags for 508 compliance and not search engine spiders.

If there is a realpic it definetly makes sense to use "alt". But not on all buttons, smallgifs etc etc . "Overoptimalization" is quicklyreached.

I have wrote it few times on the forum already...one of the images on one of my sites ranked #1 and it brings 80k users p/m who search for that image
so it is important to have alt tags

Apart from alt tags, how else can you optimize that image such that it gets ranked #1 in google image search?

i wouldnt worry about that. much less important than quality b/links
