Constraint = Clarity:
A Case Study on Testing Designers with Only Canva + 30 Minutes

BACKGROUND
Hiring for visual creatives used to be all about polished portfolios and aesthetic styles. But I noticed something: many creatives could make things look good, yet very few could make them think deeply or design with purpose.

So instead of giving full creative briefs, I designed a challenge that would reveal who could truly think under pressure—not just decorate.

⚡ THE TEST FRAMEWORK
Each designer was given the same prompt, but with specific constraints:
  • Use only Canva — no access to Photoshop, Illustrator, or premium assets.
  • Only 30 minutes to deliver their work.
  • Submit 2 completely different visual directions from the same brief.
  • Answer these two questions:
    Who is this for?
What do you want people to do after seeing this?

⚡WHAT I RECEIVED
The results made the difference in thinking crystal clear:
  • Some designers changed fonts and colors—not direction. Aesthetic, but shallow.
  • One designer created a Gen Z-style TikTok graphic vs. a LinkedIn exec-oriented layout—massive strategic contrast.
  • The best submission? A thoughtful layout backed by a rationale that challenged the brief itself.

⚡ INSIGHTS & TAKEAWAYS
  • Limiting tools reveals creativity. With fewer options, true decision-making shines.
  • Time-boxing reveals instinct. Some freeze. The best act with purpose.
  • Strategy beats style. The real winners asked questions before picking fonts.
  • A pretty design is impressive. A targeted message that converts? Unstoppable.

❓OPEN QUESTION TO BHW:
How do YOU test for true creative thinking? Do you use time limits, tools, or weird prompts?
I’d love to hear how others evaluate design depth beyond aesthetics.

Can definitely relate to this. Sometimes the mental game is way harder than the actual execution. Appreciate the reminder to take a step back and think long-term.

My test is always focused on the outcome. I'll give a prompt like 'Create a banner for [specific, fictional product] to capture attention and make users want to click the main button. Explain your audience and expected user action.'
