I got slapped when the first Panda update happened. Since then, I worked hard to get my site ranked. I made a few mistakes but learned a lot. I hope this post will help all upcoming SEO'r.
So, the Big question is, "What's working after PANDA 3.3" ?
The answer is everything if it's done with a strategy. I will use random sites to illustrate the whole idea.
No follow/Do follow Percentage:
Frankly speaking, it doesn't matter at all. Sometimes it's good to have nofollow links to stay on the safe side but these sites below shows a different picture. They are ranked on the front page of Google.com for "Dog training'' If you will study them closely, you will find that they just have only a few nofollow links.
301 Redirects Works Like Crazy:
If you ask me, I would say 301 redirect works best if you know how to do it the right way.
Here's how...
If you 301 redirect a domain sitting on the 2nd page to a domain that's on the 100th page, then the later will replace the previous one within 1-2 days. The best way is when you have a new domain that's fresh and newly registered and it's easy to get it ranked than a site that carries a penalty. When you get a new domain, the first thing you would do is to spread around 4000 Social bookmarking and PING them. Call me crazy but I do so.. ! Get around 500-2000 High PR blog posts and make sure you get them indexed. The new domain should hit the 5th --1st page but most of the time it's the 2nd or 3rd page. When you register a new domain, Google can't determine the Link velocity. So, you have an advantage.. You won't get penalised if you build too many links within the 1st week. If by 2nd week, Google finds it suspicious you will be slapped but here's the trick.
The screen shot surely shows that the Main domain is powered with tons of other domains that were redirected.
88 domains powering this site is a Big Deal. !!
Anchor Text Distribution:
Most of you are too confused about the anchor diversity and the keyword diversity while targeting your money site. It's best if you target around 400-500 long tail keywords. You will not only bring in Keyword diversity but also a lot of traffic form these long tail keywords as they can get a rank quite easily.
Do the math (assuming you are ranked #1 for those long tail keywords):
30 visitors per month = 1 visitor per day
500 keywords = 500 Visitors per day <--- That's an added bonus
So what's the optimum Keyword diversity you should opt for when you are building links?
It seriously depends on your choice. I prefer to build around 30% of my links on the main keyword. 30% links on secondary keywords. 10% links on Long tail keywords (around 400-500), 20% on the URL (http://www.yourdomain.com) and the rest 10% on Generic Editorial links like Click here, Read more, Reference etc.
Can Google Identify Trash Links/ Spam Links?
It all depends on your site. Trash links can also get you a good rank if mixed with some Quality Links. Think about Forum Posts using Xrumer. I did a case study with a completely Brand New site where I blasted the site with 10K Forum posts along with 10K forum profiles. At the very same time, I tried some social bookmarks and Blog posts. Result : Site went from page 3 to page 2.
I have seen sites getting PR4 with just trash links. So, if you can do it right, you WIN.
Well, Google don't really penalize you for using spam links if you can study and work the pattern.
Eg:
The problem is with the Link type. Using more of Forum profiles might be harmful but forum posts can be useful in many cases.. Forum profiles can be useful too when used with the right domain, at the right time with the right quantity and quality. This is not a guaranteed strategy . It's an assumption on a couple of experiments.
If I build 100K links in a week, will it harm my site?
If it's a regular site, it might harm. If it's a a completely new domain or an aged domain, it's probably safe if you build 100K within the first week. But remember to 301 it to avoid any penalty. Sometimes 301 redirects can be used as insurance. Master it before using it on your money site.
What are LSI keywords?
LSI keywords are "Latent Semantic Indexing". These are phases that matches your main phase and Google uses them to find relevancy within your website.
You can use them in your content body. You can use anywhere between 6-10 LSI keywords within the content body. The sub headings can contain the LSI keyword for added benefits (h2, h3 tags).
Some people think it's a myth but I would suggest you to build backlinks on LSI keywords. Helps you get diversity and relevancy. Google has been continuously talking about integrating Semantic Search with the main search algorithm very soon. So, it can be really useful in the Long run.
Here's an Example. I have Found LSI keywords for "Dog training" form 3 diff locations. Google Search, Google keyword tool, and keyworddiscovery.com

Spunned Content Any Good ?
Trust me on this. You can get spunned content ranked quite easily. Google don't really penalize you for having Spunend content or may be they still need to work on their Algo.

How Much Link Velocity Affects Your Ranking?
With all those Google updates, Link velocity has become a pain in the ass. I will start with an example. I had a client on art/paining. He was ranking on the 1st - 2nd page for almost all the keywords. I guess it was Panda 2.1. (not sure but it was back in Dec), the Blog network powering the site got de-indexed. The site lost a few places. I did a social Bookmarking Blast of 2K and it jumped a few pages. After seeing the positive movement I blasted another 2K Social bookmarking blast after 5 days and BOOM. The keywords were all out of 100. That's what we get when we overdo stuff after a certain limit.
Anyways, dripping links can be really useful. It helps you to maintain a stable Link building velocity. You need to cover up now. You will need insurance against those PANDA updates. Link velocity can be one of them.
My Suggestions:
Automate Dripping for building backlinks on those LSI keywords, generic/editorial links, long tails etc. For your main keyword you can always use your primary SEO services that gives you a rank.
Bottom line .........
Content + Link velocity + Keyword diversity + Link Diversity = WIN PANDA

- Flesch Kincaid Grade Level should be more than 7. http://www.read-able.com
