Those same rednecks are on Facebook. A bunch of them are on my timeline's at least.
Facebook makes U$ 34 billion revenue but only U$ 2 billion in Asia. As webmasters we all know how much traffic Asia can drive, but as you can see it's financially low value traffic.
Their shares are doing great after-market though right now, so for the short term FB is definitely not dying. Though their monthly chart surely does paint a concerning picture.
The danger of these rednecks is that they can be much more vocal about their stupidity via twitter/reddit as its more anonymous, whereas on facebook they tend to bitch and moan, and eventually give up/delete their post as someone attacks them back + facebook's moderation team is pretty good at removing hate speech. Also, your newsfeed is probably fucked if that's the kind of content you're seeing.
Re: asian demo - that's reported figures - the indirect revenue they make from asia is far more (the data, partners, which for accounting reasons probably aren't reported in Asia), and the level of activity in asia for facebook is only growing. Anyway, I don't want to give away too much, I don't want people jumping on the asian bandwagon, so take this piece of knowledge as you want. All I will add is; there's a reason zuckerberg has been fighting for years to get China.
I'm just saying, we can bitch and moan about facebook all we want, but at the end of the day, its no worse than twitter or reddit, and my umbrella point that social media is here to stay still remains.
The reptile that is zuckerberg will just mould facebook, but it's not going anywhere. Nor is social media as a whole, I refer back to my original opening point "Saying social media will die is like saying banks will die". It's far too involved in our day to day lives to die, for now. Maybe in 50-100 years, who knows.
