About two weeks ago I made this original post, I got a lot of stick on here saying I was trying to scam people etc. and everything I was talking about was all BS. I can fully understand why some people viewed it in this manner, but I want to try and redeem myself and not tarnish my reputation on this forum! So after two weeks of holiday, in this post I want to provide the evidence of the things Instagram sent me (Email, PM, Book) and that its true that I can actually recommend people for the list as well as outline the things I did which I believe helped me get on the list to try and help other users on this forum.
Background: I got 36k followers in two weeks from being put on the suggested user list. The list is updated every week, and each user stays on for 2 weeks. There are currently 341 users on the list (the people instagram are following), the list is mainly seen by people joining the app for the first time. If you remember carefully when you signed up you were presented a list of 'suggested users' to follow. My account contains my personal photography and Instagram only put people on the list who share original content, so if you don't do this then this post is irrelevant to you.
Typically users on the list gain from anywhere between 25k and 100k followers. I also want to add that about a year ago I set myself a goal of being on the list, and thus in this year analysed the list a lot and gained quite a bit of knowledge about it.
What I did and things I recommend doing:
1. Make sure your account contains only your best photography or content (no selfies, food, etc.)
2. No spammy activity (follow/unfollow, mass like, mass comment, mass hashtags etc.)
3. Become IG friends with other good users, as well as users with already large followings whom take similar photo's or have things in common. (A lot of my photo's were outdoor based so I befriended similar users. Also before I was put on the list about 15 of my IG friends were put on the list. I can't say if they recommended me or not but I think it definitely helps to know people who are being suggested).
4. Interact with other users in a normal, friendly, encouraging manner.
5. Participate in Instagram's Weekend Hashtag Project (WHP) and abide by their rules. THIS IS THE BEST PLACE FOR INSTAGRAM TO DISCOVER YOU! (I entered photographs into these contests almost every weekend for a year)
6. Patience: It took me around a year of doing the above things, and around 100 good photographs to be put on the list.
If you do these above steps and take good quality original content then YOU will eventually be put on the list. But do refrain from any kind of spammy activity, they will almost definitely not put you on the list if you do this kind of stuff.
I've attached the 3 pieces of evidence Instagram sent me, the last line of the email depicts where the option to recommend other users is. For recommendations, please PM me. If you have any other questions let me know below!
