How I find good keywords without much competition

Hi Guys and Gals,

I just wanted to share my way of find good keywords with actual traffic but very few competitors, and hear of any ways you think I could improve it. :)

Here is my method:

1. I find the average number of monthly searches through Adwords KW Tool
2. I find the number of competitors by searching Google for intitle:"my keyword" intext:"my keyword"
3. Now on to some math: numberOfSearches / NumberOfCompetitors * 100 - This will give me a value between 0 and ~ 8000 where the most valuable keyword will be with values greater than 400. I define the value as "Keyword Ranking Potential Index" or KRPI..

I developed a tool to do the actual scraping and calculations.. Here is an example of the report generated for the keyword "weight gainer":

Interesting method. What does the intext search have to do with the value? Just curious because I've never really seen that used to determine competition.
 
The intext simply does a Google search for intext:"your keyword" - It just returns the number of number of pages having the keyword phrase in their text. Alone, the value will not tell you much about your direct competition which is why I dediced to search for the number of pages having the phrase intext and intitle.

Of course you can just do a search for the phrase on Google and get a crazy high number, but most of them cannot be count as actual competitors..

Yeah, that's the idea.. However the challenge will be finding/renting enough proxies to scrape Google, so I might do it as a webservice where I do the actual scraping to ensure quality..
It also costs to use the Adwords API as I do now to get the number of monthly searches.. So a charge per. keyword report would be an option..
 
Why use the adwords API?

I wrote a custom piece of software that just scrapes from the google keyword tool... sure, it has a captcha, but I just outsource that to decaptcha at a whopping .002 per solve..

Works well :)
 
Sounds like too much work when there's a lot of solutions out there that will help you pick "good keywords" without having to come up with your own formula. But, if you feel like being a trail blazer...good luck.

Remember KEI? No where to be seen these days...
 
That's pretty cool. Is there some way to incorporate some sort of google insight in there or something like that?

I found a keyword that gets 9k searches per month and only has 760 competitors. But it has dropped so much that the average search volume does not reflect it.

KEI will not indicate how easy it is to rank for a keyword, only how valuable it is to rank well once you get there. The idea with KRPI is to identify niche gaps...
 
hello! Is there any possibility of getting the low competition kW and the high valued CPC budget?? OR the both of them could be scrape at one time??
