Are there any free high-authority backlinks?

do or did salvage sites? You guys keep talking about this like it is pre HCU

These days the same 100 sites are at the top across all SERPs, they have millions of backlinks, and it will cost you far more than you want to spend to try to catch up to them

you're talking like you've personally tested all of the sites in the world and you know for a fact that not a single one of them can be salvaged with backlinks. Even without testing this I still say it's not true :)

I'm not debating the cost of catching up to the big dogs, the discussion was whether backlinks can salvage sites , don't sneakily divert from it :p

Anyway, I agree with you that backlinks have lost importance in many cases, but they've become obsolete as you're implying :)
