It's helped some of mine but I tanked for about 5 weeks prior to picking up. I exclusively use SSL now because there's no reason not to. It's free if you want and you don't have to worry about switching over later as it becomes more important. Also, browsers will make your site out to be shady if you have any login forms on a non SSL site.

there is no "concrete" proof that https itself helps in ranking however everyone is obsessed with it and there is a good chance that it will be a default setting in next year or sooner. So the best thing is it apply it asap.
