    Hey guys,

I'm looking into doing some local seo. I'm curious about how difficult ranking will be.

Lets say I go after the keyword "portland oregon contractor". That phrase in quotes has 154,000 search results in google.

Would you consider it to be a difficult job to get a site already ranking on page 2 or 3 up to the middle of page one for this phrase?

How long do you think it would take for the new ranking to be established after seo work had begun?

    Thanks for your insights!

Maps just make it a little harder....you could get ranked with 155K no problem if you know what you're doin. Piece of cake.

    Your page 1 competition is Google Maps, a .gov site, a bunch of PR4's, 2 PR5's, a PR3 and a PR1 that has 143 backlinks.

Nah, you can make rank, not numberone because of google maps owning that slot for good. However, you can use google maps against itself, to your benefit, with a mashup site.

Study mashups and plug the api into your site, using maps for visual location resources and your local seo content for the rest of the site. Beat out the pages between you and the #2 slot and market the crap out of the domain. Just because it is harder, doesn't mean it can't be done or isn't worth doing.

I don't know a whole lot about Google Maps. Are the businesses that show up there bidding on those spots, kind of like Adwords, or is it more like Yellow Pages advertising?

Nope, it has to do with the way they use google maps as part of their business or promote a google maps link in their site and get good rank due to the traffic to it, just like youtube gets rank for a video being watched on view counts raising its position.

I will give you couple of insights:

    1. Your competition didn't fully optimize their title and description +
    2. allintitle is weak (about 7k) +
    3. Anchors pointing to competition aren't targeted -+
    4. If you will have fresh domain, you will have to wait about 6 months for real result to be in top5 steady. -+
    5. Buy portlandoregoncontractor.net - it's available. Make some little advertisment (ezinearticles.com, hubpages.com, some comments) | Kill competition +
