How hard is it to outrank Amazon? My website has been around for 2 1/2 years (auction domain) has about 20 DA and 110 RD, ranking decently for some other teams.

I'm thinking of trying to rank for a new keyword that Amazon is the top 5 results for.

You can outrank amazon easily with a Boosted Youtube Video on a autorith channel is much easier and it may work for what you want

Why not try multiple keywords ? I would launch dozens of pages see what floats.

If I try to rank for same word + keyword variation(s) then I can risk keyword cannibalization and none of them would rank

Have you done any competitive research on the listings on the first page for the keyword phrase you're targeting ? What does the competition look like ? Is Amazon even optimized for that keyword or are they just listed there because they are an authoritative domain ? The first thing you need to do is do your research on the competition and that should inform your next steps.

This is the top 10, all e-commerce stuff, it looks like no blogs are even trying to rank for this keyword yet (or are miserably failing) it's all ecom sites until page 3, then its a couple of blogs targeting a variation of the keyword.

Man, throw some web 2.0's.. maybe 20 or 30 for good measure at your keyword phrase with some social signals and you should be able to outrank all of them.

What about the other domains listed in top 10?

Can they be outranked? Because, even if you try to compete with Amazon on this KW, if the other results are from Etsy, Ebay and BestBuy (as an example), you will need a really strong domain with good stats behind it.

Have you considered running some Google ads first to see if this Kw is worth considering?

Have you set up a post/page targeting this keyword yet? If so, where have you landed so far with on page only?

I've tried ranking for such keywords before and it's possible but it takes a little more effort because the intention of the keyword is ecommerce while you are trying to rank a content based site.

Amazon is easy to beat depending on the search intent of the keyword.

If its a buying or money keyword then Google usually favors e-commerce stores and pages with products e.g. Amazon, so its gonna be harder.

If it's a research / info keyword then Google usually prefers long-form blog posts, which gives you an advantage over Amazon.

Agreed - I've been able to do it by using a ton of web 2.0s and social signals

I would suggest the same as outranking amazon on a major keyword would be difficult but out of 100's you might have a chance to out rank amazon and get few sales.

But surely you can optimize your website and backlinks with social proofs of your presence will help you get sales, traffic and maybe out rank amazon on more keywords than what you can achieve in current state of you website.
