Currently, I have a site that's at DR 33.
1,822 Backlinks (91% ********)
318 Referring Domains (92% ********)

Most of the competiting sites are around DR 50.
Example:
DR 48
165,510 Backlinks (77% ********)
13,540 Referring Domains (93% ********)

How hard is it to bridge this gap? Do I actually need another 163,000 backlinks?
And how in earth do you go about doing it.

No. Of course not. Actually, the more backlinks you have, the harder it is to bring the DR to higher numbers. Just build links with DR over the average. Build backlinks that count, in content. You have to build enough to counter the low DR ones that will come from automated websites and web2.0s.

No, you don't need to build 163,000 backlinks. I'm sure if you look into anything with that many links, you'll find they're all spammy garbage, except for a few that actually matter. You don't need many backlinks to rank if they're good ones.

No you don't need 163k Backlinks. There was a seller here in BHW that was promising a certain increase in DR in short period. And the reports he showed wasn't that big.

You should quality links instead of quality for higher DR. Moreover, if you have relevant and targeted content, you can still rank better than your competitors.

You should get backlinks from high DR sites.
And dont make 1000 of low quality links make high quality backlinks.
You can try outreach guest post. You can find some seller here on forum marketplace they offer service to increase DR

Building links quickly will rank you faster but not race your DR later in the game. it's better if you concentrate on building high quality links even if it's fewer of them.

Okay, so this is for ranking. I'm at #9 and want to be around #4-6.
This is the current state of the search results:

#1 DR 50 Backlinks 68,328 Referring Domains 1,220
#2 DR 65 Backlinks 2,798,821 RD 19,112
#3 DR 62 Backlinks 41,265 RD 947
#4 DR 44 Backlinks 114,594 RD 1,091
#5 DR 48 Backlinks 165,905 RD 13,627
#6 Same domain as #5
#7 DR 74 Backlinks 1,224,289 RD 19,828
#8 DR 56 Backlinks 845,521 RD 49
#9 DR 33 Backlinks 1,830 RD 321 <--- My Site
#10 DR 0.2 Backlinks 8 RD 6 (recent news article on topic)
#11 DR 55 Backlinks 5,572,468 RD 1536
#12 youtube video
#13 DR 24 Backlinks 1186 RD 206

Should I be doing high quality (and if so what counts as high quality and how many?) or should I be doing lots in which case what volume?

DR is not responsible for ranking above your competitors but quality contents and great on-page SEO is

Well the site has quailty content and great on-page seo. It goes through on-page seo checkers with flying colours. Search terms in URLs, search terms mentioned on pages but not stuffed. Relevant images with alt texts, It's got pagespeed of 90+ with the competitors having pagespeeds around 20. Great internal linking. You name it, I've done it. Unless I'm going to start adding OpenGraph annotations to the site, there is nothing left to do on that front. So it's an off page seo problem.

no, you really need not to go for that many of backlinks to clear out the bridge gap as 10 high authority backlinks are much more powerful than 1000s of spammy links.

FIrst you need to understand what 50 means.

100 means you own the site with most links on the internet. Zero means a new site with no links.

And it's a log scale

So from 0 to 100 it's going from a new site with no links to the site with most links on the internet.

Take your link count, divide by the links on the site with most links, you get a number. Then put that number on a scale.

That's what it's doing.

This is year 2000 stuff. No longer meaningful at all.

This problem can probably be fixed with just on page changes. Increasing your DR isn’t going to do anything to your ranking.
