Hi!

How Google recognizes brand names?

Surely it does it automatically based on the site. Company name is often added to the meta title and is always relevant, there is no association with the domain name. How does Google do it?

Good question...this would be interesting to analyse in depth from a local seo point of view. I'm thinking and can't find a good answer. Here are few presumtions: wikipedia page, contact page on website, wikidata page, footer of website.

Maybe other more experienced members could pitch in.

It depends on what you mean by brand and on the size of the brand. Normally the business is not the same as the brand, like apple and iphone8 for example.

In the case of a local small dentist, is it what you mean by brand? You create a site, it is a "brand"? Or a business?

Imo in both cases google will use various ways such as knowledge graph, business registration, trademark, etc.

Agreed except the KP part....knowledge panels are generate, when talking about brands and business, by what G understands to be a branded search. So u have to convince G that a keyword or keywords are a branded search.

Example: if ur brand is called RED APPLE how do u make G to generate a rightside KP for keywords like red apples, big red apple, reddish apples?

The answer is simple, in theory, u make G to believe the keywords above are variants of the brand RED APPLE but we are back to OP question - How G recognizes brand names?

Machine learning.

And they often get it wrong for small brands. The most repeated word that is not a common word (there's a name for this, I don't remember it now) is probably the brand.

I believe there is a difference between:
- knowledge graph
- knowledge graph display

I am not talking about the display. Knowledge graph is a technology to understand words such as apple, and to be able to know if the user is thinking of the fruit or high tech company. So in the case of apple, they have gathered enough information to know that apple is a business (by the way not a brand). iphone, they know in their knowledge graph (no the display) that it is a a brand.

So u have to repeat a non common word all over the web for G to perceive that non common word as a brand? I really doubt is that simple.

Ok...where are these KP u talking about? And how G interacts with them?

It really is that simple.

Machine learning is simply repetitions.

What Google does is add filters so that its rankbrain does not learn too much noise. Finding out how these filters work is the key. It is not rocket science.

I never used the term KP, I said KG (knowledge graph). This is a technology from google, and one of the things it is supposed to do is understand the meaning of words better as a human understands it, such as brand, (famous or not) person's names, etc.

I think it's a little bit of rocket science see the army of engineers G hires for stuff like this. It's interesting to find out how G recognizes brand so we can manipulate it, the possibilities could be endless.

Oh my bad.....from my understanding Knowledge Graphs are part of G algorithms so it's not something we can't manipulate......or can it be manipulated?

Maybe domain name, facebook page, Google merchant
no :D

Friends from the world, I thought the answers would be more technical. Dear, Google is not wrong to choose companies even in small businesses like hairdressers or bakeries at the end of the world. It can not be anything else like a local database with which Google always works in a given country. After the phone number, as in the maps, they choose the company name. That's my theory. They can not be microformats because not every one uses them, it can not be Facebook or a domain, not every contact gives a proper company name. Topic solved.

Through backlinks and implied backlinks, for example I can easily outrank your site for your brand name if you don't have at least a few backlinks with the brand as anchor text.

This is a great resource for this question, and there are many more articles that describe how entities based SEO strategies can be employed.

Google will eventually start recognizing brands, brand names, or people as specific entities; and then closely associate those entities with specific domains and search queries. Over time, it can become damn near impossible to outrank specific domains for entity based search queries/keywords.
