I find this question subjective.
For instance, if you have an expired domain with a lot of authoritative backlinks, you May or May NOT be able to rank your content with that domain. Ultimately, Google determines how valuable a site might be to searchers.
Sites that show up consistently is a combination of luck+optimizedcontent+trust factor and somehow they happen to become a big site generating money consistently for its owners. Ultimately, SEO is a game of patience and luck. You could do all the right things and still fail to see results.
We are worshipping Google, trying to impress the bots and courting favour whether using the white hat methods or black hat methods, we are begging Google to rank our content. It is you vs existing sites already ranking in your niche.
One site must drop in rankings for another site to pick up in rankings. So even if your site is ranking well today, you still need to keep Google interested in website content only that you don't have much work to do.
I like to see SEO this way, your domain as the most important asset you have, followed by your content. A well optimised crappy content can rank with a powerful and trusted domain. Make your most important asset valuable to Google. Make Google trust your domain and you will rank almost immediately for even highly competitive keywords.
When I start any new website on a fresh domain, I see my domain rating by Google as 0. Now, I think of ways to make Google take notice of my website, these are my favorite techniques.
1. Make Google see my website link in places that matter. i.e build backlinks from around the world wide web. The more often they see my link in other websites, the more they begin to trust my website.
2. Publish semantically related articles on my website. Give Google a broad overview of my website keyword cloud. 3. Update your article to the current date regularly. I noticed Google loves articles whose timestamps have been updated and they rank it higher than less recent content.
Now here is a secret technique I often apply when entering any niche. First of all, I get at least 3 websites that shows up consistently for the niche related queries. If it's a WordPress website, I check their sitemap. Usually it's going to be in this format http://www.mycompetitors.com/sitemap.xml or http://www.mycompetitor.com/sitemap_index.xml.
Checking their sitemap gives me an idea of how many articles they have on the site at the moment and also I know the articles I want to have on my site. Note, some of these websites usually block their sitemap so you'll have a figure out a way to do this in such cases.
I aim to duplicate this site NOT their actual articles but the topics and keywords they target. That is to say, I replicate their sitemap on my site by publishing all the articles they have published. This is very feasible for websites with a few hundreds articles and would probably take you a few months to do that.
This technique works very well especially if you looking to run a content website with ads monetization in mind.
