How far can just RankMath or Yoast really take me?

Using WP and Yoast, but considering switching to RankMath.

My question is how far can either of these really take me with SEO?

Would I be better off doing something else, like focusing on backlinks?

You are talking about 2 different things.
Rankmath and yoast will guide you to make your content optimized for SEO.
Backlinks come afterwards.

This^^^

Those tools are basically for guiding you, they also do a few things like sitemap and meta description. Nothing much more.

They have nothing to do with backlinks, they help your on-page while backlinks are off-page aspect of SEO.

Thanks. So just using either Yoast or RankMath will not increase SEO but it will prepare the pages.

I was using yoast as beginner. Then I purchased rank math on black Friday 2020.

Now I have no seo plugin installed and website is still holding its traffic. Google understands WordPress structure a lot now so less worries if you use wordpress

On page SEO can take you far but not as far as you think IF you are going after a very competitive keyword

For competitive kws, focus on both on page SEO and backlinks. Also, focus on higher quality link sources.

For less competitive or more obscure (but lucrative) niches, RankMath can go far IF you are very deliberate re SEARCH INTENT and factor in your competition in the SERPs. How? Beat them in terms of content length, kw optimization, LSI, etc etc

SEO is about more than 200+ factors. Those are onpage SEO plugins and will take you little far but you will need to optimize lot more, I mean way lot more, not only using those plugins and link building.

They're used to ensure that your content stays optimized for SEO.
Alternatively, you can check up top 5 pages ranking for your search term & copy their content structure.
