How exactly SEO works?

Hi

Long story short: I started my online business at the beginning of the year, and of course i've reached to the point where i must focus most of my time on seo/advertising/sales/marketing/etc

I spent some time trying to learn about seo and get the grasp out of it, however there is one thing that I cannot comprehend/I cannot understand: how exactly is seo helping me get organic customers? Okay i understood that my having better rank page / any other metric increased that will tell google that my page is trusted, therefore resulting in my page being shown in the first results; I also understand that backlinks might be a really good way to get traffic since i basically buy from someone an article created on a blog which has many visitors and that link on his article might get me some visitors, but is that it? I feel like I'm missing out some good points or i don't fully understand something

also, if you'd like to share some white hat seo tricks to boost my website would be nice :)

SEO works by bringing the right people to your site and keeping them there.
It’s not just rankings, things like matching search intent, fast loading, and helpful content can turn clicks into customers.
 
SEO in layman terms is helping search engines find, index, and rank your content. You need proper structure and sitemap for them to find content, categories and hierarchy to index content, and proper marketing strategy & branding, so that they can rank your content. You should also do the same for users to find, trust, and follow your site. So, you shouldn't do something that's against the interests of your users for the sake of SEO.
 
You have to learn to research keywords, more keywords you rank for the more eyeballs you get on your website through search engines.

SEO helps by making sure the right people can find your site when they’re looking for what you offer, not just by ranking higher.
Things like targeting the right keywords, improving site speed, and matching content to search intent can turn more of that traffic into actual customers.
 
It’s not just backlinks also on page SEO for example keywords, headings andinternal linking. Off page SEO and content that matches search intent all matter.

Thanks for all the replies, however I am still confused. From your responses, seo help my page rank higher, build authority and gain me organic visitors. The last part (gaining organic visitors) is what I don't understand. If everybody works on their SEO + there are already solutions in my area (SMM), then how could I ever possibly outrank them, in order to be displayed in front of them? Like are people actually going through every page of google result and maybe they will find me there? Or maybe by having the backlinks to some other websites with more authority and more visitors, maybe that will bring me organic visitors? This is truly what I don't understand about SEO.

It is not an issue if you do not understand it. You can always hire others to do seo for your website. Like on BHW also there are many skilled guys out there for this.
 
SEO helps search engines trust and rank your site higher, bringing more visitors through good content, keywords, speed, and backlinks.

It depends - on exactly what SEO actions you’re taking for your website. SEO is a huge field, ranging from improving content to attracting branded traffic and link building (which itself comes in many forms).
Some webmasters, however, limit their efforts to simply writing meta descriptions for their site’s pages and still call it SEO.
But these are very different approaches, and the results will differ accordingly.
