how does wikipedia work?

hello everyone, I don't know if this topic has been covered before so if so please point it out to me I will delete the trhead.

situation:
over the last couple of days at home with fever, to pass the time i have been editing some wikipedia pages that are particularly sparse in content. going around the forum i read that wikipedia can actually provide backlinks (?)

questions:
1) in addition in one edit I included a link of my own but looking on ahref or semrush the backlink does not appear. is there anything more I dvoremi know?

2) in case actually wikipedia releases backlinks what is the best way to do it?

note: my edits in the last few hours have been seen by 360 people and some even ended up on my linked articles

Wikipedia links are nofollow, mean they don't pass SEO value, which is why they might not appear in tools like Ahrefs or SEMrush.

to gain value from wikipedia you can focus on contributing genuinely useful content, and ensuring your links are relevant and support the article, which can drive direct traffic rather than SEO benefits
 
thank you all for the responses, however, I would need a couple of clarification.
also looking on the marketplace of this forum you often see people selling backlinks from wikipieda, why do they come no-follow? other thing, a while ago analyzing on ahref some compotitors i saw that to them backlinks from wikipedia were “seen” or “counted”.
 
You don't need to listen to the opinions above. Wikipedia has a nofollow tag, but backlinks from there are loved by Google, search engines and tools like Ahrefs and Semrush.

Since these tools have their own unique robots, they do not immediately index backlinks, even if they are already in Google. It's worth the wait.

Backlinks are best left in references. This seems to be the best way on Wikipedia.
 
It doesn't matter if they are no follow, Google loves them. They give trust. In ahrefs or moz they appear, usually are the fist ones to appear in any tool. They just need more time to detect it (aprox 2 weeks)
