How does this black hat technique work?

Hey everyone

Lately in a lot of the niches I have been persuing the guy sitting in the first place only seems to have less than 100 back links in very competitive niches. What kind of black magic is this? Is it some sort of redirect I have never heard of?

dont share the domain, better if you could tell us what type of links they are, blog comments, directory links etc.
 
They look like web 2.0s. But there has to be something I am missing. 8 backlinks to a URL in the number 1 place for a 50k monthly search key term?
 
all the links might not have shown up yet in the backlink checker you are using, that or they may have done a 301 redirect that hasn't shown up yet.

I'll bet more will show up if you wait a little longer.
 
They are most likely blocking the spiders/robots from Ahrefs, Majestic, and other third party backlink reporting tools in their .htaccess to prevent people from seeing where they are getting their links and copying their technique.

I'm thinking about doing the same for some of my sites, cause I'm getting creative with my link building and don't want the techniques copied.
 
Quality outranks volume. The right authority, highpr ******** links....... it sometimes doesn't take very many.

This is the most likely scenario. My clients are starting to do block backlink tracking bots.
 
Blocking backlinks robots is totally worthless. A backlink robot doesn't even need to access your website to know what links are pointing to your website. It gathers them while crawling the web . When it find a backlink pointing to your website it just stores is in the database this way {anchor text | Url pointed to | Url pointed From | etcc etcc} there is absolutely no need to crawl your website. So blocking backlink bots is totally worthless.

You block the robots from crawling your good links, not your site.

Don't say there is no way.
You block them from your private blog networks or high pr blog network. of course you can't do that on websites you don't own, like the web2.0's , profiles etc etc.
 
Going back to what the OP started this thread with, its no blackmagic mate! Some sites just get to the top - don't ask how. There are many more factors apart from what ahrefs, majestic and Moz show us. We just aren't given the key!

Well OP there is your answer, if you see a site sitting on top with just some web 2.0's then they are in fact using their own or someone else's private network. You have to own the site you are linking from in order to block the crawlers so if no new links show up in a week or so then you know what they are doing. What you DONT know is the age/pr or number of blogs they are on but just start doing your own thing until you outrank them...

There's a way to get links blocked from the robots as well.

@OP, if you can send me the details I'd be glad to take a look at it.
The niches I'm dealing in, same competition as lower lever insurance keywords, sites ranking with only internal backlinks. High DA though. I'm applying the same technique on their website as well to find out whether they have hidden backlinks.
