How does the Verification System work on Twitter?

I always thought it would be quite cool to get verified on Twitter with the little checkmark next to your name. Although Twitter has made this seem impossible to the average, unpopular user, I was wondering how the system works. For example, if you buy someones verified account off of them, and change the name, bio, picture, ect.. to whatever, does the verification go away until someone verifies it again? IMO it could be useful to have this verification status in many ways. For example, let's say you're on a gig website, like Fiverr, and there are two service offering to retweet your tweet to 1,000,000 followers, but one is verified. Any sane person would choose the verified account.

Just wondering how the system works, if anybody knows. Thanks!

You lose the badge once you make any changes to the profile and then you have to reapply. The only way to get one if you're not famous is to pay $15,000 to twitter for advertising.

It's actually easier than people make it out to be but harder than any normal person is willing to do.

You have to buy a couple hundred thousand followers, now Twitter says they don't verify people based off followers, but that's a lie (somewhat). once your account looks like you're popular you need fans and you need fakes, therefore buy an account creator or hire someone and create accounts with usernames similar to you etc and make the accounts look like they're pretending to be you.

Then here's the fun part. Report all the hundreds if not thousands of fakes to Twitter and fax them your ID or create an official website for yourself and use that email then wait and relax while Twitter verifies you.

In total all this will cost you about ~1,000$, maybe cheaper if you find people selling cheaper services.

Wow - I never thought about that...such a clever methodology

I would hazard that having the little tick makes you attractive as an authority figure on Twitter. If you can get a set of clever/funny tweets queued then that's solid gold!

Where there is a will there is a way! You know, I joined twitter about a year ago, and got all my followers with the sweat of my brow... about 4,000+ but now everytime I want to follow people even the people that follow me I get a "you have reached your limit!!
