How does site ranks in google without backlinks?

I've got a site ranking for a few profitable related terms 300 - 1600 monthly search. Only on page SEO, no backlinking, moderate competition from high authority domains (Amazon, tesco, mensfitness). Been there for almost 2 years with very few backlinks built naturally (it's not the sort of thing people really link to). Great onsite metrics 1% bounce rate, lengthy engagement etc. Not saying this is typical, but it can be done if you know what you're doing. I don't think "build it and they will come" works for new blogs with most moderate to high competition of course, so it really depends what you're targeting.

It kind of depends on the authority of your domain, relevancy to the search term, and quality of the content. The page might actually have a ton of links and they are just blocking spiders and that is why it might appear to be ranking for a competitive term without links.

Only hobbyists with no business sense will try to rank without backlinks, if your a real business person its all about the ROI, i am not going to wait 6/8 months to rank a 1900 word search phrase, if you wanna do that fine, but don't think for a minute you're in the IM business, cus your not, you're a webmaster,

Guys you still misunderstood me and clearly did not get it. It does NOT take 6-8 months to rank a keyword like that w.o backlinks, it takes WAY less. Just because royserpa ranked it after 8 months does not mean that is the general case. I can also give you a ROI scenario as well, but I'm not gonna bother if you cannot see the value of ranking keywords w.o backlinks just by spending 1 day perfecting your on-page SEO... in maximum 3-4 weeks!

Still don't know how those huge kws have such low competition that you ranked with no backlinks. The marvel in all of this is your keyword research skills if anything !

Sure. If your monthly search is high, then quality content and the low competitive keywords can rank your site in google without backlinks but it takes time.
