How does SEO benefit from posting PDFs on doc sharing sites?

I see many SEO blueprints that require writing a .pdf document of some kind and posting it on doc review sites (such as Scribd, SlideShare, etc.)

How exactly does this help with my SEO? Do I place a link into the text of the .pdf, and the search engines will crawl it?

I just want to make sure I'm not wasting any effort by doing this.

Those sites are displaying the document on-site, have high authority and pagerank. From spiders point of view there's no differences between normal links and those comming from embeded pdf's.
Basically, you're just creating links on high authority sites. End result is the same as getting articles on ezinearticles and so on, but with much less hassle/approval needed.

These are only urban legends... A day, a lot of time ago, someone on WF or on other site say it and after all do it
but it is like the other backlinks

Its just for link juice, never improve your website SERP alone.

I stopped using them. Most of the bigger pdf sites removed live links, so they are useless, unless you enjoy wasting your time.

Its for diversification and yes you need to place the link within the doc. Google crawls PDF files so you will get the link juice and ofcourse link from completely different platform

Just for link diversity. And also, some of them have totally high PR and High DA. So, crawlers will get it into account and will little bit help you in ranking.
Doc Sharing sites are just filler backlinks.

Some of these sites have tremendous authority. Harness it.

Indeed we build these to gain authority and also for Diversification. G Doesnt really like all the links pointing to our site from the same platform.
