How does private meme pages grow so big?

Hey guys , I was wondering how does private meme pages such as memzar or pubity grow such high amounts of followers and engagement?
They have over 10m followers and 100-200k of likes (well its around 2% but still) they are completely private but still getting bigger.
Is it because their content is completely original or I am missing something?

From personal experience,

My friends would send me memes from pages such as these and the only i would be able to see the memes would be is to follow the page.
So i would usually end up following the page just to see the memes:D

Which means they started as public page and later changed it to private?
I guess that wouldn't work with 1000 followers so well :D
 
They do shoutout for shoutout (promote each others pages) + people send memes to their friends via DM and their friends cannot see it unless they follow the page

Not a single of their memes are original. Original memes are usually made by edgy meme pages or less normie meme pages. These big pages just repost whats popular to grow. I think they grow because people tag friends and send them via dm and they follow you to see the meme.
 
It's so that when people share the posts with their friends, their friends are forced to follow the accounts to see the content.
 
They want you to follow the pagr. If a friend sends you the meme and you go on the page you can't see the meme unless you follow that page.
 
As the guy on first comment has mentioned, their main motive is to convert shares to follows. I love that move:cool:
