How does OVH rate for dedicated server?

I am looking to graduate from multiple VPS to my own dedicated server. After reading on the forums, seems like there are quite a few choices. I also narrowed it down to OVH primarily due to their prices.

Before pulling the trigger, I wanted to reach out and find out if anybody has any negatives on OVH?

If you need OVH support, then you are screwed.

If you know what are you doing and you wont need their help, then is a good choice budget wise.

I used them and I have no complaint, but I never opened a ticket in a year.

I've had several OVH servers and they're quite great. The issues however are:

1) Support. Kind of lacking if you dont know French and how to manage your server
2) Account reliability. After 2 or 3 complaints, your entire account is suspended. Protip: Have as much antivirus installed and do not port scan.
3) Speed. Depending on where your server is located you could have throughput issues
4) Requirement documentation. To get an account you're going to need to scan an ID and I think they also require a utility bill now.

Of course the upsides outweigh all of those. I mean, how often can you get a gbit server, 64 gigs of RAM with 2 SSDS + 2 2tb mechanicals for $200/month? I'd be lucky to get just the ram and half of it for $200/month in the states.


A tip though: Dont use windows as an OS. Citrix or VMware ESXi will save you about $40/month

I use a kimsufi ovh server, so far its all good. but you have to manage it all yourself.

OVH support is dreadful, I had serious issues resolving a Spamhaus complaint with them.

don't go with them, the support sucks a lot, is the bad which I saw ever

I do business with an OVH reseller, and like everyone else here says, forget about support.

Also, they have these customised kernels, that sometimes prevent you from doing some stuff, like virtualization. So you need to replace the kernel if you want to do advanced stuff.

I've been using them for some time on and off and currently have a server with them I use for SEO tools. I have no major complaints, setup is always pretty snappy (though can differ on your first order, depending on if they need to verify your identity), had no problems with any server from them.

I have heard off friends that support can be a little thin, like others have said in the thread, but I have yet to use them, so can't really comment.

Haven't had problems with that. Rolling with Citrix/ESXi and multiple VMs without any changes needed to the kernel.
