How does keyword research tools work?

Hello all.

I’m looking at different keyword research tools and find different features that I like with the different tools. This triggers the devloper in me and I started to think about making my own tool, not that there is any reason other than “for fun”.

So my question is, does anyone here know how these keyword tool work? How they get data, what calculations should be done, etc. Any insight would be appreciated.

My 2 cents.
Main variables should be:

monthly search volume - V
total search results - T
average PA of first page - P
amount of search network ads - A

Dumb equation for keyword difficulty = V / (T + P + (100 * A))

Edit: I assume each ads has PA 100.

They estimate competition through some model they develop and a traffic data source.

The only real accurate tool is AdWords, because Google has access to everyone's Chrome and javascript tracker traffic data they spy on. Other kw tools simply estimate based on data they get elsewhere.

Thanks for the input. Anyone know any search traffic volume sources except Google?
I remember back in the old days when Long Tail Pro used google keyword finder, but I will Guess google know how to stop bots like that now, or do you think the tools use the same method today?

I think they can still use the old tool if they are willing to pay the price, which is pretty reasonable for companies, not ok for individuals.

No, I was not thinking about the last 3%. It was more thinking how to get the data from Google, or another source if possible. I see that Google has an API, maybe that can be used. If not I guess some screenscraping tool is the way to go.
