I want to learn how to design logos, banners and ad creatives for my own services. Should I bother paying for Illustrator or is Inkscape good enough? Or for light vector design, will Figma be OK?

You should also check out affinity photo and affinity designer. They cost a one time fee which is very affordable. They are the next best thing to the adobe products. I also think they are far better than the free/open source products.

Oh this looks good, I'll check out the free trial. Anything specific you prefer over Inkscape?

I was used to adobe products but just can’t justify the monthly cost since I don’t use photoshop light room or illustrator to make money. I use them a few times a month at most. These feel comfortable and have everything most people will need built in. The FOSS products in the past have required plug-in installation or third party code edits to get functionality that should come standard (I’m a fan of FOSS just not when it comes to graphic design). These products are just more polished.

Inkscape should be good enough for most tasks. You might need some plugin for something specific since inkscape doesn't come with as many tools like illustrator does but it should be sufficient for most tasks.

If you just want to make simple logos, Figma is great. It's clean and simple and is my go-to for some quick designing.

I thought Krita was very polished and easy-to-use when I used it, so maybe Inkscape might be the same. But GIMP wasn't very good.

OK, I'll start with this since I also need to make some layouts. Is it good for making wordmarks with typography/gradients/etc?

GIMP is terrible imo. I disliked using that.

Hope you figure out what works for you!

I don't get how all of us just bent over and took the subscription BS from all these big corporations. Adobe has everything I use from Audition,Illustrator, PS, Premier and I'm stuck having to make installments FOREVER until I quit working. It use to be so cheap back in the day on the Staples racks in the 2010's.:weep:
