How does google react to adding content on indexed already page

Lets say I have a website with couple articles.

Of course theres a BIG benefit from making another article instead of adding it's content it to the same one.

But what I want to do is to save time, create short articles and fire backlinks, then add content (to these articles) over time.

How google reacts to this? Do they crawl changes instantly, or slowly, did anyone notice ranking increase or drop after doing this? Is this recommended or not at all?

As term frequency on a page goes up or down your relevance for that term can go up or down too. Once you get to where you want to be I recommend only changing incrementally and make sure you can rollback the changes if you don't like the outcome.

so if i have article on homepage with 2k words about green tractor and it will reach #1, then ill add 8k words about nowadays fruit/food farming etc to the same article, i will drop on tractor?

A tech blog do this all the time to keep their articles current. Google loves it, though depends on the niche.

Yes.... For example.... if your page is 75% about baking apple pies and 25% about baking blueberry pies. Then you add a section about baking pecan pies. It could effect how well you rank for apple pies, especially against pages that may be 100% about baking apple pies.

Why not just do a totally new post on the new topic?

Of course, the answer is "it depends." I'm a fan of updating "evergreen" content. I find that:

google likes seeing that you are tending to the content and keeping it fresh and up to date
sometimes, you can 'adjust' your content -- maybe it's more about a particular subject, maybe it's just plain old keyword density -- to improve your rankings for particular searches.

I've repeatedly improved my rankings in high-volume queries by updating/adjusting the page. Usually it takes a couple days for the SERPs to move, but that depends on crawl frequency, if the query deserves freshness, etc.

As long as you don't ruin your keyword density or ruin the page's topical meaning, and as long as you add an "updated" tag on page you can probably only help yourself. Easier said than done, though... but I've had success doing just this.
