I see major music artists upload a video 1x per month and still do excellent

My guess.. major label's guy 'Lyor Cohen" being the influence on YouTube, is what made this change

But for artists not on major labels, if they don't update, they get buried.

Daily uploads are king this day and age. You need to bring people to YouTube's platform every day and have huge engagement to be successful. The already established brands don't have to follow the rules of 2018.
