How does backordering work?

I've never backordered a domain, and while this one .asia I'd like has the contact information available to contact the current owner, I'd like to increase my bets with backordering.

I've used CrazyDomains.com.au for all my .asia's, and I see that they can backorder this domain - expiring this Dec - for $9. I understand that there's no guarantee I'd get the domain this way, but do I either lose the money after the first attempt, will they keep on trying to grab it for all eternity, or do I get refunded after unsuccesful registration? It's not a big sum of money, but still wouldn't like to just waste it. And I assume I have to pay that $24 normal reg fee on top of it?

Hopefully I can just purchase it off the current owner, as the domain is not currently in use, and I have direct contact information, and in worst case scenario have a friend who can help me out if the guy doesn't speak English

It just means that you can get the domain once it's registration period is over.

The different backorder companies manage it differently and I don't have experience with CrazyDomains, but it is pretty much near universal that if they don't get the domain on the first try then you get your money back.

And yes, you would need to pay the registration fee in addition the the backorder fee. Sometimes those are included together, but I doubt it is in this instance.

Allright, so I'll give the guy few days to respond first (sent email from my personal, professional mailbox to ensure that it wouldn't seem suspicious), and if I get no reply I'll just put the backorder up - just in case.
