How does a WordPress plugin key work?

I bought Mobile ATM, a neat plugin for prospecting for mobile conversions / site building.
I activated it on one domain, but I realized it would be better on another. The plug-in
is designed to run on only one domain.

I tried everything...deleted site 1, built site 1, cloned one to the other, had a plug-in called Move to
change the name of a site. It worked but the installed plugin from site one then didn't work on site 2 or even
the renamed with the same files.

I have a ticket into support to send me a new key, but they take days to follow up.

It's not a big deal. I could just leave it on site 1, but I'm curious as to how the plug-in knows that there
has been a change to a new domain name. I get a message within WordPress that it won't work on this location. Same
Hostgator hosting. Tried backing up and restoring. More of a mystery that I'd love to solve and have
it work. It doesn't seem that it commicates with "home base". Any ideas?
