I am a part owner of a family restaurant supply business, and I want to take my business online and Im looking at the keyword "restaurant supply", and want to rank it, but find it very confusing. Some websites with 9 backlinks are ahead of websites with 400, some with 400 ahead of ones with 3000/4000.

They all use private directories and link exchanges so they don't seem to have a strong backlink profile, but I saw some ranking on page 1 with just 340 links.

Is it the on page optimization and content?

I've been looking at it for days and to me it looks like they all get most of their links from partner companies and private directories/link requests, most of the competition from page 1-2 uses only those links.

There are so many factors in SEO... Total number of backlinks means nothing, actually if too many, it can be problem nowadays.
I have websites with less than 10 links that rank number one, in medium/high competition small niches, where other sites have 100s of backlinks, or sometimes even 1000s of them.

Think like a visitor anytime you do anything on your site (including link building), and you'll be victorious sooner or later.

The thing is they all use the same type of and quality of backlinks (crappy private directories and link exchanges) , Im not sure whether the reason their so successful is because they use tier 2 or 3 links or because of their on page optimization, ahrefs tool showed weak SM signals, so I dont think its that.
I saw somebody with trust flow below 10 and citation flow around 14 ranking on page 1 for this high competition keyword.

The tools Im using aren't enough to give me a good image on how I can outrank them.

Anyone know any good tools I can try for free that give you alot of features?

As other people have mentioned above, the quantity of the backlinks doesn't actually matters these days but what matters more is the quality of the backlink.

One real PR8-PR9 backlink can rank your site on page 1 while few thousand cheap low quality backlinks won't even take you anywhere near the first page.

What are the factors in the "perfect" link?

yup, it's all about the quality of the backlinks now. sometimes good just to go through all your backlinks find the problem ones and take them out if possible and you will see a noticeable improvement.

There is no free magic system
You wither buy quality links
Backlinks on relevant high PR sites with low OBL

Join a private blog farm
make your own one

Or if you want blackhat, buy sape links
not recommended for brick and mortar businesses

Buy some High PR DA PA domains with backlinks already there and do a 301 redirect

Or so what the rest of us do
Roll up our sleeves and get to work

This is how they beat them :P

try seo powersuite.

Also, no one tool will ever show you a site's full backlink profile, that's why you have to use a few to make comparisons. Even then, some links won't show, simply cos the competitor knows how to hide their backlink profile, either by using re-directs or blocking the crawler bots etc etc.

its like having 1x 1.000.000$ car. or having 4 crappy cars...

This is probably the 10th time that this has been said but just remember this:

Quality over Quantity

I would take 10 High Quality links over 1,000 Low Quality links any day.

If you really think that they beat you because they have those crappy directory links, then just go submit to the directories...

If deep down you know it is because their content is better, with more fresh updates, with more keyword relevence, with more social signals, with pretty much everything Tangy posted up there.... then you better get to work as nothing is easy.

Yes absolute quantity does not matter its the quality... you can beat that..

Here's a chart demonstrating the value of each ranking factor checked against 300,000 websites...

Misleading that shows the correlation between certain factors and ranking, plus the particular image shows how the correlation has changed over the last year not how the factors are actually correlated. Correlation doesn't imply causation, plus the data is from Moz which want to push social and very whitehat methods forward. I personally I view a lot of their data with suspicion.
