Its probably been asked a million times, but how does a complete newbie with no experience get traffic to their web site.

Im involved in the music business and want people to see and hear a band Ive done a website for.

The website was done using a basic drag and drop interface, so as you can imagine I KNOW NOTHING about html etc.

Any magic bullets to help someone out with a budget of zero????

any pointers on tips and tricks, software to use etc would be great

There will be many threads containing the information you're requesting conveniently with a quick search. Take a look around and see what this community has to offer before making demands as your first post.

You basically have nothing and want everything. I don't want to sound too cocky but this is a business and there is no short way, at one point it might require some cash to get things going.

It's ok to build a website with a drag and drop interface, and you don't need to know about technical development stuff ("html etc.") to promote it.

Though no knowledge and no budget won't make things easy, although not impossible either.

As we're talking about the music business and a band's website, you should look into social media, this is the the best way to promote the band and its website.

A few pointers to get you started:

    - Start a facebook page, and have every band member invite their friends to like it (and their friend's friends etc.)
    - Look into myspace, it's not as powerful as it used to be since facebook came up, but it's now totally focused on music
    - Make a youtube channel with music videos (if the band as some) or live videos of their performances. You don't need advanced knowledge nor BH stuff to let the world hear about their music.

To go even further then, as the others said, since you have no budget to hire someone, then you will need to expand your own knowledge to do things on your own. This whole forum has every information you need for this purpose. Read, search, learn and you'll soon get to your goal.

Make a website and start promoting it. There are many way to promote a website. For example:

    Video - youtube, vimeo, etc...
    Article - Ezine, etc...
QA Site - Yahoo answer, etc...
Facebook - Promote to related group, page, fb ads, apps, etc...
    Forum and many more.

Choose which suite for your marketing strategies. I hope it spark you some idea on how to get traffic. All of these method can be free. If you have money then you can leverage it to get more things done. :)

Thanks for the ideas, eg the QA sites and the rest. Has definatly given me a start point.
As for the likes of KIMI's reply I was not asking for everything and expecting it for nothing, I was asking for a start point, which everyone at one time or another has had to have..
    Again many thanks to all

I know this post is about a year old but i was in your position and i managed to get my site ranked pretty well for not doing to much...

First i would build it with something like wordpress which has plugins to help with seo (wordpress is just a free platform to build websites and it costs nothing but your time to learn it). download a seo plugin (you'll understand what this is after you learn wordpress). read about seo so you know how to do onsight seo (very easy, you just need to take time to read and learn). Then, just write articles...

what i did, which might help you for a local band, is to get a program that scraped another website for products... with that product information i set up reviews for each product.. My website went from having 300 people visit per day to having 5000 visitors per day in about 2 weeks... You should be able to use that same "concept" to boost your local SEO... REMEMBER, Content is king!!! or at least it was in my case...

    Hope that helps
