I had a few great backlinks that Semrush says are now lost.

However, all I did was change the URL slug and then insert a redirect.

Is that a bug or should I refrain from changing blog post URLs in the future?

If you did a redirect, then it's completely fine. Semrush is just being slow.

But ideally, try to avoid doing this, decide on URL structure and stick with it.

There's no problem with 301s,
The only downside that it might have some temporary influence over page ranking sometimes,
But it shouldn't last any longer than a couple of weeks at most

This chapter will cover the relationship between 301 redirects and improved Google rankings
