How do you upload thumbnail for YouTube shorts?

I run two YouTube short channels and there is no option to upload a thumbnail, YouTube shorts just picks one for you.

never took much attention until I realized my videos with the most views have a nice thumbnail.

so how does it work do they take the thumbnail from a specific timeframe? or can i upload a thumbnail on a different device besides desktop? anyone have experience with this?

You can always do the old school YT way of putting the thumbnail at the front or end of your video. Then when you upload the short, scroll through the video until you find your image.
 
Currently, YouTube Shorts doesn't offer an option to upload a custom thumbnail like regular YouTube videos. Instead, it automatically selects a frame from the video, usually from the beginning or a point with high visual interest. While you can’t upload a thumbnail directly through the Shorts platform, you can improve your thumbnail's appearance by choosing a compelling frame or creating a custom thumbnail for the full-length version of the video, which may show up in recommendations. Unfortunately, there's no way to upload a custom thumbnail from mobile devices; this can only be done on desktop for standard videos.
 
YouTube Shorts automatically selects a thumbnail from the video, typically from the middle or most engaging frames. Currently, there's no option to upload a custom thumbnail for Shorts, regardless of the device used.

There is if you add your thumbnail as a single frame to either the very beginning or very end of the short, you can then select that frame as your thumbnail if you upload from a mobile
 
If you use capcut you can add the custom thumbnail meanwhile editing

Even if you upload the shorts on pc, you can go to the mobile youtube app and select a frame of the short as cover (and you also can add a caption text to that frame)
