How do you, technically, build e-mail lists?

I'm experiment with some websites and I noticed a great opportunity to build e-mail lists so I started searching the forum, asking around, even tried to consult with the guys on BHW chat IRC. Bottom line I didn't find answers so... Here I am.

How do you guys exactly build e-mail lists? You use a wordpress plug-in? how do you store them, in what? a Word file? and then, how do you e-mail to your list. Now I realize that when it comes to e-mailing it will most likely won't be free, but is there any way of collecting the e-mails with a free method? I'm tech savvy, if I understand how exactly they need to be stored and used I might develop my own method and share it!

Try aweber or getresponse, they'll help you to store your list and send the emails out with high inbox rate plus they have a 1 month trial
 
that'd be great, but I don't have money to invest in it and I'm simply experimenting right now, that's why I thought I'd ask for some resources (knowledge) since I couldn't find any myself. So that I can develop a method to make the process free until the point of e-mailing.
 
I would also love to learn how to do this, as I am in the same stage of development in Internet Marketing.
 
@Mods, This may be a topic that needs to get moved to Jr. VIP, but I'm going to help him out in the meantime so he gets a good idea as to what he's getting into

Email is a very complicated and involved art. I call it an art because you need to bear a lot of variables in mind and keep up with the times to truly get the most of your endeavors, and while it's very technical, there are a lot of different ways to pull off a successful email campaign.

To put it plainly, if you don't have money to invest in aweber or getresponse then you are dealing with a very difficult undertaking. The following are factors you MUST face if you're going to start with email marketing:

1. The CAN SPAM act (look it up) - shops like aweber and getresponse make following CANSPAM easy, but that is why they are valuable and cost $$

Without aweber/getresponse (i.e. DIY)

2. Email headers
3. IP addresses of your mail servers, which constantly get banned from over-sending
4. Relay servers
5. Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail limitations (i.e. not over 100 emails per day/hour, whatever, there are docs on this stuff online, look it up)
6. Inboxing, i.e. not getting sent to the SPAM folder.

I could go on, but I just got the sense that you needed to realize what you were facing here, so maybe this will be a little intro of where to start.
 
Assuming that you got your server:
* Get Interspire Email Marketer from this forum & Install
** Create Email List in Intersp.
** Create Subscription Form in Intersp.
*** Grab generated code there and paste on your website
...
 
If you can't invest in an autoresponder then you'll never be able to properly grow your list anyway.

It takes money to grow a list and the free ways are going to be very slow, but you would need an autoresponder anyway.

To get into the email game you will need investment either way:

-buying solos
-PPC
-media buys
-building site/SEO

My advice, stick to methods that you can make money with now and save up to invest into your email business.
 
I see, well, bandwidth is very cheap in my country, we're #4 fastest in the whole world and #1 in the world with ipv6 implementation. I've planned on buying a multi-purpose server next week, to go with my office, it's a two-processor quad core (each) Xeon server. I plan on using that.

Thank you for all the info, I do realize what I'm facing here, I'm purpose-focused easy-learning, hard-worker. I'm here to build and learn, not to make easy money that I can spend on friday nights out.

Yes, if you don't have traffic yet, then it can be slow. But if you get already some descent traffic then it can't hurt to set it up for free.
You can also create an auto-responder with Interspire. Should be somewhere in the download section I think..
 
I already have hosting, money for domains, resources to advertise, websites. The thing is, I don't want to invest in building an e-mail list until I'm not sure about what I'm facing, that's why I've made this thread.

Easiest way is to create your own product and have others send peeps to your squeeze page where you have them sign up for a limited time offer or other goodie. You might want to check out Andre Chaperon's course regarding email marketing for once you do get the list. Remember to be relevant, create a drip feed of juicy info to them, start to slowly increase your emails after awhile when they are comfortable with you, use captivating headlines to lure them in to reading your emails, lead them to your Facebook page to garner likes and shares, etc.....Email is the best way to make serious money imho so don't quit trying and best of luck to ya!

Important - keep a separate hosting account for Interspire, just in case they close down your account.
