if it's vBulletin, I'd check out VBSEO. Haven't used it myself, but client had old version of vBulletin, and I really have to say it was complete shit when it came to seo. haven't used phpBB in forever so I'm not sure how good the out of the box seo on that one is, but I'm sure they're both pretty bad.

There are bulletin board specific plugins, for example, vB has vBSEO which is decent.
The good thing with forums is that, as they grow popular, several threads will rank for several longtail keywords which will account for a decent amount of traffic.
It isn't practical to optimise for everything that will be — or is — posted on the forum. Build backlinks and as your forum will grow popular, you will get some natural backlinks, which again, is a vicious circle. It will continue to grow if you gain some momentum in the initial stages.

Vbseo by vBulletin is amazing for SEO purposes but it is expensive.
Just target your pages the same way you would any regular website. Locate the pages with relevant phrases and rank that page for that phrase. What you'll notice in google searches is that there's plenty of top spots taken up by forum type pages of some kind.
If you're generating the forum content yourself then this is super easy. Just pretend the post is a blog post or page article. Make the forum post unique and keyword relevant.

i was just thinking one thing you could do is have the main page www.sitename.com a blog, and the forum as www.sitename.com/forum only problem is then you have pages farther in than just sitename.com/thread1 its sitename.com/forum/thread1

You would simply optimize the home page for the primary terms related to your forum. For instance, BHW ranks #1 for black hat seo and black hat forum. As diverse as the topics discussed here are, they all fall under those umbrellas.
Individual threads seem to rank by themselves for the low competition terms in the titles, "linkpushing" being a good example, as BTB's thread here is #6 for that term.
