How Do You Revive a Dead Subreddit?

Suppose a subreddit has thousands of members but almost no new posts or comments anymore. Would you try to revive it, or would you start a completely new community?
If you've successfully revived a quiet subreddit, what did you actually do?
Did you redesign the subreddit, introduce new rules, create regular discussion threads, recruit moderators, promote it externally, or change the content focus?

Why not try to revive it first? Most of the time, its works, without any issue. Just make sure posts are good and attention worthy. Redesigning and all other things are secondary.
 
If the existing members are still relevant in the niche, I would bring back the dead forum rather than starting afresh. The forum rules need to be reset. Posting and making discussion starters should follow thereafter.

you are on point, this is the best way to go about this and give out different offers like discount and something people will be interested with
 
For a subreddit with thousands of members that has long been inactive, I will try to revive it by making the community more vibrant; this approach is better than starting a new community from scratch.
 
I’d base the decision on current traffic, not the subscriber count. Check the recent unique visitors, views per post, unsubscribes and where the traffic is coming from.

If decent posts still get views, run a four-week test with 2–3 repeatable formats, one weekly discussion and quick replies to genuine comments. I wouldn’t fill it with empty posts just to make the sub look active. If the views have disappeared as well as the comments, the old member count probably isn’t worth much.
 
If the current members still fit the niche, I would give reviving the comunity another shot. New discussion topics, regular posts, and some active participants will make you establish the habit before thinking of redesigning anything.
 
An existing member base is valuable a fresh community has to build that trust and activity from zero
 
Redesigning the subreddit and introducing new rules should be secondary and can be done in like 10 minutes. Your focus should be consistent posting which would help reviving the subreddit if the members are still using Reddit.
Start posting 1-2 times per day for 1 month and you will get your results. Add crosspostings to get new members
 
start small with weekly discussion threads, keep it consistent. then recruit active old members as mods before making big changes. people come back for routine, not overhauls. slow momentum beats rushed redesigns every time
 
Regular posts + discussion threads + some external promotion would be my first test before starting over.
