Hey guys,
Since this is the blogging section, I assume that you research and write your own content.

So my question is how you research it? This information will help me because you might be doing it better.

Also, do you cite the sources at the end of the article? Does it affect your rankings?

If you are bad at writing then its always better to hire a writer.
I am very bad in writing articles and its kinda boring and time consuming for me, so I simply outsource it.
But if you write yourself then you can simply Google about the topics or look some sample at the article directories and then write them in your own words.

I normally use Google to get my content. I search for my keyword and collect 3-4 content relevant to my niche. Then I collect information from those content and create a new content. You can follow this method. I found it really effective.

It's called Content Curation.
1.Go and create an account on Scoop.it
2.Go to Google and search for your keywords and find 2-3 articles that you like then scoop them into your scoop.it account
This Scoop.it is like a pinterest for articles that u just find and after you scoop an article from web, scoop.it will generate 50-100 more articles from the web that might interest you (it's a very powerful tool for every blogger),after that you can start curate with scoop.it by drag and drop elements from each article and create a new one.
3.Go for Wikipedia,Youtube and Google Images
-You can get some informations from Wikipedia and put it in quotes "Wikipedia text" and insert it into your post (small text.. 1-2 rows but useful information)
-You can get 1 video with useful informations from youtube
-You can get 2-3 images with useful informations from google images or pinterest, like this one: media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/b5/bf/a5/b5bfa5b0df2b334e85b4fb6af612de86.jpg

4.You can go for Twitter and Facebook comments and insert them into your post, this usualy bring traffic almost instantly after publish(search on google how to integrate tweets into articles)
5.After that you can start promote your article by sending your images to pinterest, excerpt to tumblr, video to facebook page ,etc

Start with your subject(keyword) then find variations of it. I use ubersuggest and google keyword planner.

First ubersuggest to find potential long tail keywords and then google keyword planner to find the search volume and possible other keywords. Then develop content around it. Have fun!

I use Google to find an authority on the subject and then go from there.

Look at the top sites that are ranking, if they are not my own.

Can this be done with free account?

use google planner for research keyword for free. find 3-5 articles, take 1 pharagrap/ article and spin :D

make a topic that you like it and you can write well, can explain well

Use google and search for keywords. You can also use SM and forums (tons of discussions on different topics)

If u want to find and research content else hasn't already found by anyone. Then need to search on different search engines like DuckDuckGo, Clusty, Internet public library.
