I'm attempting to use anchor text more carefully because I've seen some websites penalized for over-optimization. How do you strike a balance between keyword, generic, and branded anchors when creating links?

Go with the 'match and exceed' mindset - get backlink reports for say your top 5/10 ranking competitors, calculate an average of the ratios that they have, and aim for the same.

Most safe profiles lean on branded and generic anchors, with only a small % being exact match. Mix in partial matches naturally, and you’ll avoid over-optimization while still sending keyword signals.

You're on the right track — over-optimized anchor text can definitely trigger penalties. A good general strategy is:

- Branded anchors: 50–60% (e.g. your site or brand name)
- Generic anchors: 20–30% (e.g. "click here", "visit site")
- Partial match or long-tail anchors: 10–15%
- Exact match keywords: Keep it below 5–10%

Always aim for a natural, diverse profile and adjust based on your site's age, niche, and competition

I usually keep anchor text as natural as possible and focus more on link relevance than strict ratios.
A healthy mix works best mostly branded and generic anchors, with a smaller portion of exact or partial keyword matches. If the content and placement are relevant, anchor diversity tends to happen naturally.
