Sometimes I write a stupid program to students on request for money.
How do you make money with programming?

I make money on writing sites. To write some commercial software and it does not work in IT companies is very difficult. You may not be clients. And sites to write much easier than any CAD

I work as a programmer and I have enough work at work to the house to do something. Home to relax, read books and watch movies. And to pay attention to the family, cleaning, dog, cat
I code apps, websites and sell them. today there is great demand for iOS apps which help me earn a good amount of money. I also get hired by some local organizations to manage their websites and also help them create websites. my advice to all programmers out there. dont get hired permanently by some institution, there is good money working independently. thanks

I never used iOS, what do you think about android development and it's market? I will also create some android apps.

This is the worst advice in this thread and a common myth. Tons of programmers decide to build something for iphone and android in order to discover that they can't market it.
Either get a job as a programmer or first research your target audience before you start building an app for them. Building products requires you to have reach.

But seriously, a lot of stuff already mentioned.
You either:
* Do your own thing (freelancer).
* Get a job at a company.
Doing both is a pain.
Job at company requires "less thinking" if you can say that.
You just have ton of tasks and you deal with them, but you usually need to work at fixed hours per week which kinda sucks. If you like the job, it might be better.
Might get boring after some time.
Being a freelancer you need to think what you want to do, what you can do, what might make you money.
Even if you have an idea in which you invest countless of hours while making it, nothing will ensure that you get any profit of it. Promoting is hard, people might not see it as useful as you do.
If you make something successful it's much more rewarding within I think, you know you made something of your own.
Companies do pay quite good, but it's usually penises what the project is really worth. Unless you're a project manager, but that doesn't involve too much of coding then...
If you need guaranteed money, I would keep an eye for a job in the company and maybe try to spend some time on personal projects in free time (including research and other stuff).

I am a programmer and here is what I do.
Find something that you can make money with first. Any IM process. That might be advertising on facebook, keyword selling, fiver gigs, making niche websites, etc.
Once you have found a process that is profitable then automate it. Once you have it automated then scale it. Soon you will have lots of passive income coming in. that is when you find another process that makes a small profit and you do the same thing. If you do this over 5-10 projects then you will be making a lot of money over time.
In order to find the things to automate I suggest just searching this forum for methods.
Also think outside the box on this sort of stuff. Lets say you want to do domain flipping as one of your methods. Since you can code everything you can now record every little statistic about the domain. You can then analyse these stats to find the most profitable angles. Or if you can't find anything useful then turn those stats into a web site where other people can get access to your information for a subscription.
Here is a real life example of the first project I did. I found I could automate the setup and updating of quick little niche websites which updated daily with automated content. Each one might bring in about $5- $10 a month. Not massive profits at all. But because the whole process is automated I can quickly add new sites (takes me 5 mins to create a new site) and add to my passive income. I have 268 sites at the moment. 268 sites * $10 = $2680 a month and I do nothing each month except pull in the cash. I don't sit on page 1 for any of these sites but they get organic traffic easily because there content is growing every day.
I don't add much to that project anymore as I have moved onto other things but its a real life example of what can be done.
