Once I had a corporate client paying me $10k for consulting.
He let me look into his WP Admin.
I saw 20+ plugin update notifications: & nothing was updated since 1+ year :D
They would rather leave everything in the old state than lose new, high profit customers in the construction industry :D

Which hosting provider is that ? Very personalized service they are providing.

My thoughts exactly :D

NameHero mate and read my comments before posting anything ok?

Asked and answered I guess.

This sounds like something wrong is going on with the overall structure of the website.

By who's definition?

I'll put a pencil on the table and bring 10 people in to judge it, and they'll all find something wrong with the overall structure of the pencil. Each of them a different thing probably.

But it's all mostly bullshit. Just people being people :p

If it breaks for you when you update wp, it means someone played with the wp functions, you or freelancers. Better hire a dev to create a separate plugin with all the edits you need for wp functions, so you don't edit directly. Same with the theme, if you want to update it but also have custom changes, hire a dev to create a child theme. This way you can update both wp and main theme without breaking anything ever.

No see, no!

When I first decided to stop updating everything, it was because I couldn't deal with shit always breaking after an update.

But back then, I didn't have any money, so no freelancers ever touched my virgin wordpress site. At the same token, I was very green and I knew I was green, so I was terrified of touching and editing anything.

Everything I did, everything I used, was free and from the Wordpress repository of themes and plugins. And I never edited anything.

So you and all the rest of you who say that if an update causes problems it's someone's fault, with all due respect, you're all full of shit! Guaranteed, on my life.

Install wordpress and 5 plugins. All official. Wait a while. Let them automatically update, once, twice, three times. Go in, you'll have problems that you did not have when you first set everything up. On my life!

It's simple. A site shouldn't break every 2 of updates. If it does there is something wrong with the back-end. So maybe consider using different plugins, restore the database, etc. Also every opinion has a different validity, depends on experience

To OP, he also said this

What misinformation? That I've never had a single problem with updates? Well... I haven't.

No need to argue... we all have our own difficulties.

I don't believe you.

By the way, if you update but you know your shit so you do it in a way where you make sure the update won't cause any problems, or you can find the problems after the updates and immediately fix them, that doesn't count.

Like, if I'm a car mechanic and I check my car every week and take care of it, and I come to you and say "oh yes my car has never broken ever."

Yeah, that doesn't count.

So what about these?

I just, I'm not upgrading wordpress version itself and upgrade the plugins since i found out the wordpress itself makes me most trouble, i upgrade only major versions.

To avoid any damage to my website, i don't update right away.

I don't update.

I only update majors releases

You ain't right man

Yeah, i saw many hosting startups are focused on static WP now (is that a new trend?)

You have 2 choices, either use ManageWP for your updates, it takes a backup before updating your site, read up on their update/backup functions, or you use a Managed Hosting company like Rocket.net that takes care of your updates, backups, problems for you.

Myself, I use ManageWP with auto updates, makes my day a bit easier with my clients sites. If you make money, why not spend money on your moneymaking sites?

Yeah but Tumblr is like a throwaway thing. Anything that can and will easily ban you can never be something to take seriously. Can't sleep at night man :D

Oh I LOOOOOOOOOOOVE static HTML websites.

I may just give it up all up and just churn out static HTML websites until the cows come home. I love those sites. They're so good, I swear to god :D

Because generally there's no need to.

The 2 sites that made me the most money is a static HTML website, and a Laravel website.

None of these ever require an update. And any money I spend on them is in the 2 digits for small fixes/upgrades.

That's paradise right there, Jack.

The rest of my sites, in particular my 2 wordpress sites, one is a blog and the other a fiverr-clone type site. None of them ever amounted to anything. And they were always a pain in the dick!

Yes, I'm the best programmer out there... just like the best doctor, economist, financier, etc.

If they don´t make you shit, delete the buggers then, no more problem.

So this thread is a non existing issue then?

Well then you're either lying, or you're an anomaly.

There's a saying, it goes - one like none

So you're one, and one is like none :p

So it never happened. Updates on wordpress fuck your world up.

This is true, you don't count ahhaahha :p <3

I didn't say they don't make shit. I didn't say I don't have hopes for them. I just said that so far they've been more trouble than they're worth.

I mean, the fiverr-clone has made me some nice money over the years, but what's true for both of my Wordpress sites is that I've spent.. I don't know.. thousands of hours on them, to get not much out of them.

My static HTML site and my Laravel site, I didn't have to spend much time on them at all. Because once the initial push of setting them up and making sure everything looks nice and works is done, I was done. I didn't have to dick around with updates and all these things. The sites just worked, and I could focus on getting clients to them.

The wordpress sites though, it's always some shit. That is unless you disable all updates hoho :p

Okay, you're another one to claim updates don't break anything.

So are all these people making it up?

I could probably find a million of these.

So when you guys say that updates never break anything for you, like, you ain't right man. You, like, you can't do that. It's not cool. It's not honest. It's... wrong... wrong wrong wrong. You motherfuckers need jesus :D
