By using some of the link building services, etc. on this website, how do you know if you become black listed (vs) just going down in rank?

You will get a lot of bounces for one.

google "spam blacklist check" and you will find tons of sites to check your ip/domain.

MX Tools is a good site i have used.

Google Webmaster Tools often will tell you why and give you a path to submit for reconsideration... thats about it... Not being in the SERPS for 6 months is a good sign... Not being in the SERPs for 1 month... not a sign... if it hasn't been long I recommend just sit back and wait... don't change.. don't panic... just wait and see... 9/10 you'll be back up and running in a week or two. I radically changed my retail sites and fell out of the SERPs 3 or 4 times for 2-4 days each time over the course of 2 weeks. After two weeks... back in and making steady gains... I think it has to do with making big changes that radically effect your content score in a short amount of time.
