Hi guys I was questioning myself, how do you guys (and girls of course) see when your web 2.0 is penalized? When i search for complete URL in Google it's still on the top, but i think some may be penalized. Adding them all to GWMT would be a lot of work and asking for problems. Is someone able to help me out? Thanks! Mark
You can't add a web 2.0 to webmaster tools in most cases since you do not control the root url. Also, there's no good way to tell if the web 2.0 is penalized or not aside from checking if the link is indexed or not. Overall I wouldn't worry about this, I'd just build more web 2.0s.
Actually you can tell. Put a super low competition keyword in the title, one people aren't doing seo for. Something with like 500 exact matches when you search it in quotes. Something that would rank top 100 based on the web 2.0's domain authority alone. Then rank track it. If you see a big drop you know it's been penalized.
This is the reason you would want to use your own domains for money sites and web2.0s as parasites or tier 1s.
If the web 2.0 is just for link building purposes then build more web 2.0 pages and leave it be, however if you were turning a web 2.0 into a money site then pay for some hosting and get a real website. -RK
Check a random phrase from your web 2.0 in "double quotes". If you are not number 1 and a scrapper outranks you, it's been penalized. Not the best indicator, but a start. Better would be to search for a page title and see if you rank on top, but this does not work if it's a more competitive keyword. Overall, you should not worry that much about your web 2.0 being penalized - unless they are authoritative, have age or PR, in which case you should know at least a couple of phrases they used to rank for that no longer appear. Usually the link building done to a web 2.0 - with few exceptions, depends on what you do - is not enough to get them penalized.
To know if a web 2.0 site is penalized, view it's traffic stats. If it's traffic has dwindled or plummeted, then there could be a penalty. Also, for web 2.0s that let you add your url to GWT such as wordpress.com, you can check for manual actions and how many impressions it's still receiving.
No need to worry about that. From my experience i have not heard penalized web 2.0 will affect your site.
Thanks everyone for the good information! I use the web 2.0's for tier 1 so that would be no problem. Thanks again!
