How do you know if instagram username is available or deactivated?

A 5 letter username all the sudden changed their username after claiming it. Then about a month later, they changed that account's username to "userm39jfm1" (giberrish). I guess their plan is to transfer the username in 14 days.

I know after you change your username, no one can take it for 14 days but why is it that when I type that username to change it to it, it shows an error of "This username is not available for use on instagram."
I tested out with my backup account and usually it should give an error note of "this username was used by someone else in the past 14 days. Please try another."

When I went on "my account is hacked" to see previous owners of usernames, I see a new username that got added . It was 3 but now I see 4. But I saw this even before 14 days hit. So I am really confused. I did not see that 4th username before. How is it that another username got added before 14 days of user change?

Now what I am wondering is, did this guy manage to switch and instantly deactivate it? is there a way to confirm if the username is still not released or if he or someone else managed to lock it then deactivated it?

Instagram sometimes holds he usernames even after deactivation; that could explain the error.
 
This usually means the username’s still locked probably held by a deactivated or banned account. The extra username in your history could be a glitch or early swap. Honestly, the best you can do is wait it out and check back later.

Instagram will hold the username for 180 days. In most cases, people will get the name, create the account, and then the page gets suspended so they will have "180" days to make the appeal. That is why some usernames are held for a certain amount of time, beyond the 14 days they listed.
 
Sounds like a pre-transfer cloak move lol. ig's system is buggy af with old usernames—he prob softlocked it or used a burner to park it. gotta watch it daily, it might drop weirdly.
 
Search the username on Instagram—if it shows “User not found” but not “Account doesn’t exist,” it’s likely deactivated.
 
That usually means Instagram’s still holding the username. When an account gets banned or deactivated, the name doesn’t drop right away, it can stay locked for months. Best move is to just check it once in a while. If the “not available” message disappears, that’s your window to grab it.

Yeah, fair question. I don’t know for sure it’s just a possibility. Sometimes usernames show up briefly in history due to caching issues or leftover data from previous swaps. It’s not super common, but it happens.
 
Looks like classic username limbo. Could be deactivated or temporarily locked. Usually, you’ll only know it’s free after 14 days or when Instagram updates.

Hi, It’s likely the username was transferred and locked on a deactivated account. Instagram’s system sometimes extends the hold beyond 14 days for security reasons.
 
I’ve noticed usernames added mid-cooldown, could be a glitch or someone preparing for a swap.
 
If someone changed their username and deactivated immediately, Instagram may keep it locked to prevent abuse.
 
Maybe the account is still in a 'holding' state, not fully deactivated yet. Instagram's system can sometimes act strangely with these transitions.
