For those with experience, what’s worked best for keeping followers interested post formats, posting frequency, or content types?

On Tumblr, the metric that matters is the Reblog, not the Like. Since the algorithm relies heavily on the tag ecosystem, I've found that text posts often get ignored unless they are meme-heavy.
Are you using the Queue feature to drip-feed content 24/7? Since Tumblr users are global and often active at odd hours, consistency through the queue usually beats a specific "posting time."
 
I keep my Tumblr content engaging by consistently blending authentic personal insights with visually appealing posts, thoughtful reblogs, and interactive elements like polls or questions so that followers feel invited into an ongoing, creative conversation that evolves with their interests.

Focus on visual and relatable content, post consistently (1–2 times/day), use GIFs, short stories, or aesthetically posts, and engage with reblogs/comments to keep followers active.
 
The best way to keep engagement on Tumblr is to alternate between photos, quotes, and reblogs of viral posts. I don’t try to post too much, just keep it to 2-3 posts a day so followers respond more naturally. For me, Tumblr still suits emotional and raw content, but the more I try to polish it, the less engagement I get
