Hi as you can see I am a noob :D
I can build websites, I know HTML etc but I really stuggle when it comes to marketing! and yes before you say it I have read tons of posts on here but its all a bit mind blowing and am not sure where the best place to start would be?
I need to get traffic to my site for starters, what method tends to work best?
I also need to rank decently in Google etc, same thing I suppose, just not sure what the best way is, I presume backlinks? if so whats the best way of getting them ie pay someone, software, social networks? please help or at least point me in the right direction. ;)

    Thanks

First off you need to segregate your knowledge search so you don't over whelm yourself.

Getting traffic can be a whole segment by itself, many methods paid and free you need to search which ones work for you.

Ranking in google is about backlinks and seo, again both of these topics can be broken down into segments in which you could research and find appropriate knowledge on from this forum.

Secondly, there is no How TO DO IT OVER NIGHT type of instructional set you maybe searching for, well there are some but they don't go into detail about the science of each. Affiliate marketers handbook would be a good source to start with.

Last, the questions you have, alot of other seasonsed marketers have issue's with and depending on your budget you could OUTSOURCE the processes that you have no clue about.

Took me over 3 years to know what I've learned and alot of it came from taking action, you will not learn anything by just reading theories, you need to take action on what you've learned to see what works.

It's not hard, but also not as easy as you think it maybe. It takes hours of reading, watching video's etc. But if you really want to learn, the hours reading and watching will not bother you.

Asking for help will only lead to various answers and theories that will again, leave you nowhere because your not taking action to see what works for you and what doesn't. You will fail alot and that shouldn't discourage you, it means your getting closer to what works. I spent the whole summer of 2008 from june-dec watching videos and reading pdf's for almost 18 hours a day (I was un-employed) but that summer I learned A LOT to say the least because I was always on it. Im not saying to be a maniac like that but it goes to show, how hungry I was for the knowledge and I didn't stop searching and reading until I was over-whelmed.

Here's a handbook I mentioned earlier, sure wish I had this when I first started out, but then again it probably would have answered too many of my questions and I wouldn't have the thirst for knowledge that I had then. Enjoy and don't stop reading and implementing. A ton of theory is nothing compared to an ounce of action. Read this PDF and it should put things in perspective for you. I made this long answer because I was JUST LIKE YOU when I started, I could whip up sites and that was it, but you will soon learn, that is a big advantage over others who don't.

    i totally agree with CJ

if you have the cash, get somone to do it for you the right way for SEO optimization etc and then instead of spending hours reading you have a live model right in front of you much less time would be taken :)

but use the search button and pick brains if they let you :)

I'll add one thing: It's important to know what you're paying for if you outsource. One of the first mistakes I made with IM was paying to outsource SEO and not knowing exactly what I was getting for my money. Yes, there's a lot of info out there, but spend a couple of weeks reading for 8 hours a day and figure out what makes sense to you.

I could tell you exactly what links to buy and/or how to rank #1 in G for whatever, but then I'd be giving away knowledge that took me a year, countless hours, and thousands of dollars to acquire :) Gotta put in your dues and experiment.

Yup, I'll echo what's been said here.

Also, if you suck at one area, but are great at another, JV with someone that excels in the area that you're struggling with.

    Specialize. Easy as that.

Having the number one spot in google is one thing, if you see no ads beside your #1 listing that means it's not that profitable and could be why your not banking from having that #1 ranking. :D

You need to conduct keyword research and rank for keywords that are profitable so when you get them ranked #1 you receive sales from the traffic.

Lesson #1: make sure you're not logged into google when checking rankings manually. (quickest way is open incognito window) otherwise you will ALWAYS see yourself as #1 even if your #1000

You may think you have read loads.

However you've only been on here less than a month.

Keep reading, and most importantly put the methods into action.
