How do you grow a subreddit organically

I'm working on a subreddit and would love advice from people who have successfully built active communities. What strategies have worked best for increasing quality members, consistent discussion, engagement without relying on paid promotion.

From my experience, the best growth comes from being active in related communities and giving people a reason to join yours. Consistent posts, genuine discussions, and good moderation usually bring more quality members than trying to grow quickly.

Focus on quality over numbers. Be active Yourself, create regular discussion threads, respond to members, recognize good contributors, and build a clear community Identity. Avoid spammy self promotion participate genuinely in related communities instead. I think this is important, give people a reason to keep coming back and talking to each other.
 
From my experience, the best approach is to make the community genuinely useful first. Post consistently, encourage discussion, and participate in related communities without constantly promoting your subreddit. Once people see value, the quality members and organic growth tend to follow.
 
Crossposting relevant stuff can help a lot early on, especially if you are contributing to related communities rather than just dropping your sub link everywhere.
 
if your bootstrapping the sub use aged accounts with existing karma - new accounts pushing the same community get flagged quick by reddit. post consistently, engage genuine with related subs, and let it grow naturally. the algo rewards actual engagement not spam
 
I would focus less on getting loots of members and more getting the first active users. Post consistently ask questions that are easy to join and participate in related communities without spamming. Once you have regular discussions growth becomes much more natural.
 
Create high-quality, niche-specific content, act as your own "bait" to stir up initial discussion, and set clear rules for filtering from the start.
 
A steady approach helps attract people who are genuinely interested & more likely to participate regularly over time. Start with useful discussions encourage real conversations & stay active with your community.
 
Make the first few members feel heard. Once people start having real conversations, growth gets much easier.
 
I would put emphasis on giving reasons for members to return instead of looking at the sheer number of members. Doing niche content posts and being active in other subs on the same topic can add up over time.

The bait aspect does work, although I would make sure that people are not forced to be engaged, instead, there should be just a few posts that could raise debate.
