How do you go about setting up an affiliate program?

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but another member here suggested I set up an affiliate program to help drive traffic and sales to my website. I was just wondering how I would go about doing this. I am just starting out with my website but have been selling on ebay for a bit. My products aren't anything new but I did have them branded. Just seeing if this is a viable option for me and how I should go about implementing an affiliate program if it is an option for me. Thanks in advance for any help. And sorry in advance if this is a dumb question.

I'm really just looking for a simple system where affiliates get people to my site, the people buy my products, and the affiliate that got them there gets a percentage of the purchase price. Any cheap/simple ways to accomplish this?
 
I am interested in this too, but I am not sure how to go about setting it up and if I need to worry about any tax laws.
 
I would assume you would only pay the taxes on the item that sold. I don't believe an affiliate is considered an employee, more of a referrer. However, my knowledge of this is almost nil so I would suggest looking into it further or hopefully someone here knows how that works. If you find out anything about setting up an affiliate program please let me know, I would really appreciate it. I'll do the same for you if I find out anything.
 

I didn't get it, do you want to promote other products/websites or do you want other people to promote your product/website?

Keep in mind that I don't know what kind of site you have or how advance it is, but I think you should take a look at wordpress affiliate program plugins. It sounds like its exactly what your looking for. "You can manage affiliates, create referrals and track visits to your site through affiliate links. Referrals are stored and attributed to an affiliate, for example if clients place orders on your site and you need to credit your affiliates. You can show your affiliates how well they perform, by embedding simple shortcodes on a page....etc" <-- straight from the site ... so try it out, I know a lot of people who say that they like it.
 
I'm operating on bigcommerce so I will see if they have an affiliate plugin. Thanks for the suggestion. I hadn't even thought to check if it was something they had.
 
Apparently iDev has an affiliate program that integrates with bigcommerce. Anybody have any knowledge about iDev?
