Hello reddit,

I was wondering if someone could explain how you go about getting some type of functional "software" onto a device like a camera. I have a random canon camera but I want to upload my own software onto it. What software language can be used? And how do you make it.."work"?

I have PHP/HTML/Javascript coding knowledge but not much besides that.. I don't mind hiring the work out, I just want to know the process of going about and doing it?

Thank you!

Provide more details about the camera: brand, model. Please see:

Anyway, unless you get someone from the team that's worked on it, the chances of getting somewhere with this are very close to 0.

If that doesn't work and there are no other 'Firmware Kits' then you're out of luck, unless you want to dedicate your life on reverse engineering the thing, lol. Devices like cameras use much different hardware than PC's, so they use special compilers. I doubt Canon would release any documentation or tools on that, not sure though..

Search the Canon camera site. They have a SDK(software development kit) for developing apps. You have to register to get it but it exposes a ton of information about the various digital cameras in their product line.
