how do you go about finding/writing supporting articles for your main article? Does every supporting article need to have a keyword to target in order for it to push juice to my main article?

No it doesn't. I call these "fluff" articles. You don't have to target any keyword. Just try to get as many article ideas as you can, write short articles about them, post them, interlink them and you are good to go.

if im sending juice through pbns is it better to send it to these supporting articles that support the main article so that when a penalty does strike, it hits the supporting article and not my main article? is this the common way? or does it damage the main article too somehow?

To homepage and to your money articles.

Hi, @Kaden. Do you have published blog posts that contain one of the main keywords of our main article? You may use those as anchor texts.

Above posters are rightful in their decisions.

I concur.

Cheers,
C.
